Abstract

Content Based Instruction (CBI) is a language learning approach that places content (material) as the main focus and uses language as a tool to understand the content. In Content Based Instruction (CBI), students learn a language by studying a specific topic, such as culture, society, or academic subjects, using the target language as a tool to understand and interact with the content. The history of Content Based Instruction (CBI) began in the 1970s with the emergence of a language education movement that emphasized learning through context and experience. Content Based Instruction (CBI) developed as an alternative to more traditional language learning approaches that focused on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Content Based Instruction (CBI) emphasizes language learning through understanding context and showing how language is used in everyday situations. This approach helps students understand how language is used in real situations and enriches their understanding of the world around them. The role of the teacher in this approach is to lead learning by determining the content (material) and creating learning situations that allow students to interact with the language in real contexts. The teacher is also responsible for evaluating and motivating students in learning. While students as active role in learning, understand and interact with the content and situations given through the use of language. Students also have the responsibility to prepare themselves and utilize the lessons to expand their knowledge and language skills.
